~About Us~

Hi--I am Cindy Sunderland owner and founder of "Gluten Free 4 Me"!  My husband, Rex, and I began preparing gluten free foods in September 1994.  Let me tell you why........

In 1993 we were blessed with the birth of our first child, a beautiful baby girl.  During the first year of her life, our daughter grew normally and was a happy child.  However, by the thirteenth month of her life, our once thriving child had become lethargic and was quickly losing weigh.  By seventeen months of age, our daughter was unable to walk and talk.  In August of 1994 our daughter was hospitalized and one week later, after a confirmed biopsy, we learned she had Celiac Disease/Celiac Sprue.  Our doctor had warned us that "the diagnoses is easy, feeding this child will be difficult."  Upon leaving the hospital we were filled with joy and optimism.....our daughter would be fine; all we had to do was keep her from eating wheat and any other gluten containing foods.  NO PROBLEM we thought. Arriving home, we immediately began emptying our cupboard of all products containing wheat, barley, rye, and at the time, oats.  We soon discovered that our cupboards were bare and that we had one item--rice puffs, which we could feed our daughter.  Realization that this was going to be a DIFFICULT task had struck.  We spent the next several days frantically looking for health food stores which carried gluten free/wheat free product.  Finally, we found what we were looking for and we eagerly purchased many products only to discover that our daughter wouldn't eat them.  We didn't blame her, as we didn't like them either.  So the CHALLENGE began........making gluten free products that our daughter, as well as our family, would eat. 

Since 1994, we have came a long way in making gluten free products!!  What we once considered palatable (and in the beginning, that's all it was)  has grown to be almost indistinguishable in variety and quality to the pre Gluten Free days.  In fact, in 2000 when our second child, then five years old, was diagnosed with Celiac Sprue, via a confirmed biopsy, he had no problem switching from a wheat diet to a gluten free diet as he could rarely tell the difference in taste. Other friends diagnosed with Celiac Sprue tell us our children don't know what it is really like to be gluten/wheat free because they have such wonderful variety and great tasting food from which to choose.  In all we do, we strive to provide our children with a variety of foods that look and taste as close to wheat products as possible.  In creating "Gluten Free 4 Me", we will provide you with the same quality tasting foods.     

It used to be when I was baking, our small daughter would come into the kitchen and ask "Is that for me?"  Whatever I was baking would be for her.  She would be excited and say "it's for me!"  So in honor of my children....."Gluten Free 4 Me."  Hopefully you too will enjoy our products and be excited to say it's...........
